You know... I pride myself (somewhat) on being one tough hombre when it comes to putting up with barn odors. I guess I must have toughened up my nostrils back when I was a kid. We used to visit an old lad that had a weaner hog operation and he used to always want to show us any new litter of piglets. So we'd shuffle along behind him... eyes bleary and burning... noses running like a tap... But somehow, after awhile, it seemed as though we became immune after enough trips into the hog pens...

But, chickens... Now that's a whole different ball game. We're not talking a few nice hens and roosters out in the chicken coop or scratching around in the yard. No sirree... We're talking trying to stand inside a big laying bird operation with a few thousand chickens for more than say....30 seconds...

First there's the noise which is just deafening... and then... well...then there's that noxious ammonia gas that just burns your eyes and steals the breath right out of you... kind of "displaces" all of the oxygen in your lungs I guess...

By the way... I had to do some work on a farm safety publication awhile back. Did you know that the combined squealing of a barnfull of hogs is right up there at the top of the decibel rating list... up with your supersonic booms, Pink Floyd concerts, and other similar ear-destroying audio phenomena????

Scary, eh?
