Clarent Announces Successful VoIP Interoperability with Cisco

October 5, 1999 08:25 AM
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1999--Clarent(R) Corporation CLRN , a worldwide leader in carrier-grade, phone-to-phone IP telephony solutions, announced today that Clarent and Cisco Systems have successfully achieved robust interoperability between their Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) products.

This interoperability work will allow service providers and enterprises to use the Clarent Command Center to provide back-end network management, call logic, routing, billing and gatekeeping functionality for networks composed of a mix of Clarent and Cisco IP telephony gateways.

"Robust interoperability with the Clarent Command Center is a cornerstone of the Clarent Open Network Environment announced two weeks ago," said Tom Kershaw, vice president, market and product strategy, Clarent Corporation. "We are very pleased to achieve this significant milestone. Service providers and enterprises will strongly benefit from the complementary technologies provided by our companies and from the ability to successfully install a combination of Clarent and Cisco products in their networks."

"We're delighted to be working with Clarent to deliver an interoperable VoIP offering with robust management, provisioning, and control," said Alistair Woodman, director of marketing for Cisco's Packet Telephony Division. "At the core of Cisco's Open Packet Telephony framework is a commitment to standards and to working with Clarent and other leading partners to provide customers with complete end-to-end solutions."

Initially, Clarent/Cisco interoperability is planned for Clarent Gateway Version 3, Clarent Command Center Version 3, and for the Cisco 2600, 3600, and AS5300 voice gateways. Commercial release of the interoperability module from Clarent is expected in the fourth quarter of 1999.

Clarent's and Cisco's interoperability work is based on the ITU-T H.323, version 2 recommendation, and on the IMTC iNOW profile for gateway to gateway interoperability.
