Aren't the ALU units already 80 bits? (in pretty much any modern processor)

And Athlon already has a doubled (64 byte) cache line width and cache management architecture, so it might make some sense to call the current Athlon a hybrid 32/64 bit processor. We don't know what other parts of Athlon are already configured to support the transition to X86/64. It could be that the Sledgehammer design was the goal from the beginning, and Athlon is a partial implementation.
