This is a brief part of an article on BellSouth's desire to find a merger partner. GBLX is a target according to some analysts. They don't realize that the GBLX/FRO merger is complete.

In any event, BellSouth still has other options. "BellSouth is going to need a long-distance network," said Andrew Schroepfer, senior analyst at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. "Level 3 Communications (LVLT: news, msgs) has a great game to talk about."
Other analysts mention the Frontier-Global Crossing or IXC Communications-Cincinnati Bell combinations. Both Frontier, which is being acquired by Global Crossing, and IXC (IIXC: news, msgs), slated to be taken over by Cincinnati Bell (CSN: news, msgs), own modern long-distance networks.
BellSouth, of course, has usually taken its time, focusing more on boosting profits and sales internally and less on expansion through big, splashy deals. And the carrier has been very successful. |
