HIJim,
Sorry to take so long to answer your questions.
Here is an unsolicited statement though: I dont think I'd short a stock much over $25 again...too risky...and I dont think the internets are good for shorting unless you have a very firm resolve: they WILl go down, but may go up enough to shake you up first.
Brown and co does, indeed have a "sell short" choice on the internet site. Fidelity used to but stopped about six months ago...now you have to call and speak to a representative, presumably so they can tell you how dangerous and risky it is.
fidelity has taken on a new "big brother" attitude that I do not like. (I still have several accounts there however).
I dont think there is any cash requirements to short, but you would have to have margin ability, and margin buying power.
I am trying to figure out if there is a "buy when the stock gets higher than x" like there is on stop-losses....good idea, isnt it? But I dont think there is...will check and let you know.
I have made the most money shorting when I have been in a stock running up sharply...when I believe it is time to take the gain, and I sell my shares, that is often the time to short...for a few weeks anyway as the stock retraces someof its steep gains.
