nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com

October 6, 1999 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has developed a digital
video disc (DVD) recorder using its own technologies.

The company announced Oct. 5 that it invested five billion won and used 30
researchers to develop the new DVD recorder. (1,214.10 won = US$1)

"Our DVD recorder allows real-time recording and play," said a Samsung official.
"We've filed for more than 130 patents for this product at both home and abroad."

The world market for DVD recorders, which are likely to replace existing VCRs, is
expected to kick off some time next year and expand to 1.25 million units by the year
2002 and 10 million by 2005.
