A little late ...
The File System Properties selections Desktop, Laptop, and Server configure your system's cache settings for these typical uses. The settings were determined when Win98 was first created and those settings are appropriate for the hardware commonly available at that time. Today, we have people using laptops with more RAM and disk space than servers had a few short years ago. Win98's a bit behind the times.
What the settings mean ...
Desktop: Computer uses electricity from the wall instead of a battery. This machine has 8meg RAM minimum. Win98 tracks 32 folders and 600+ files. Win98 caches conservatively.
Laptop: Computer uses battery power. This machine has less than 8meg RAM. Win98 tracks 16 folders and 300+ files. Win98 caches conservatively and flushes regularly because Win98 doesn't know when the battery will die.
Server: Computer uses electricity from the wall with a UPS. Win98 tracks 64 folders and 2,000+ files. Win98 caches aggressively with great risk; hence the need for the Uninterruptable power supply.
Since I have lots of RAM, and run my laptop from the wall electricity, I use 'Desktop', but I could use 'Server' too, since the laptop has the equivalent of a built-in UPS.
I've changed this setting without difficulty.

P.S. Rich's right! Re-loading Win98 from your CD is a quick way of getting things working OK again and should take less than an hour at the worst. Extracting a file from .CAB on your CD is easy too, if you know how. If you haven't done this before, you'd need to spend a minute or two discovering how first. It may be worth the time just for the confidence and feeling of satisfaction. |
