Vidal is a pretty good polemicist. I have not read anything by either Roth or Bellow. I haven't read Vonnegut since I was a long-haired dope smoker! Do you think he's worth revisiting at this point? I have read a couple of things by Doctorow, Billy Bathgate is the only one that stuck with me. I know I read at least one other, but it must not have left an impression. Have you read anything by Cormac McCarthy? All the Pretty Horses is a wonderful read.
