I reread "Cat's Cradle", and was as amused as ever, and that is not his best book....Vidal is amusing, but shallow. Just guessing, since I am not familiar with everything, but my guess is that the best thing he ever did was the screenplay for "Suddenly, Last Summer", with Katherine Hepburn,Montgomery Clift, and Elizabeth Taylor, based on material from Tennessee Williams, who shares credit... "The Counter-life" is the Roth book that impressed me... Doctorow's best book is probably "The Book of Daniel", a fictionalized treatment of the Rosenberg's, but "Ragtime" is excellent, and both are better than "Billy Bathgate", which is pretty good....Bellow's best are probably either "Herzog" or "Mr. Sammler's Planet". If you try them, be advised that it may take awhile before feeling immersed...I have not yet read Cormac McCarthy, but I believe I have the book you mention lying around waiting for me to get to it.... |
