Yes, they would. The Tandem systems (acquired by Compaq) are now Alpha (acquired by Compaq) based. This puts them at a disadvantage, since software has to be developed directly for them, and there is much less availability of Alpha software versus Sparc (and of source, x86 desktop). Java is Sun's wild-card here (versus x86 software), it means that they automatically gain applications no matter which platform the Java was originally developed on.

For this and other reasons I believe the Tandem systems are more expensive solutions than a Sparc based system with equivalent capabilities. The Tandem OS is Unix, not NT.

Also, one has to question whether Compaq has managed to retain the experts from DEC and Tandem when they acquired the technologies.
