No Preannouncement From Dell Kevin Prigel

Dell Computers NASDAQ:DELL
Technology | Quote | News | Research

The source for the Dell preannouncement rumor appears to be incorrect, at least from a timing perspective. However, going into the holiday season, with supply problems looming and component prices soaring, the stage does seem to be set for an earnings miss.

The Taiwan earthquake has only made the supply problems for laptop screens worse (we reported last month about delays in the shipment of Dell laptops due to these delays). Additionally, component prices are soaring, most likely pushing margins at Dell downward. Finally, other computer manufacturers that keep inventory of components on hand (an inferior model to Dell in the long run) have locked in lower prices, possibly allowing them to take sales from Dell as they (other PC makers) are able to lower prices.

Added together, it appears that Dell may have a tough time making earnings this quarter.
