Cutler-Hammer Introduces Fire-Guard(TM) Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter

New Technology a Breakthrough in Electrical Safety; Anticipated to Significantly Reduce House
Fires

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Cutler-Hammer, one of the Eaton Corporation (NYSE: ETN - news) businesses, has announced the introduction of
Fire-Guard(TM), the first arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI), a device that recognizes and mitigates dangerous arcing faults in electrical circuits, a major cause of
residential fires today.

''Electrical fires in the home cause loss of life, serious injuries and millions of dollars in property damage each year,'' said Steve DiArchangel, AFCI market
development manager, Cutler-Hammer. ''Cutler-Hammer is recognized as a pioneer in AFCI development. We are committed to AFCI technology, which will
minimize the risk of house fires resulting from dangerous electrical arcs.''

Cutler-Hammer's arc fault detection technology, which is integrated into the design of home circuit breakers, detects and clears dangerous electrical arcs that can
result from abused and damaged wiring. Common causes of electrical arcing faults include broken down insulation due to age or lightning strikes, poor electrical
workmanship, and inadvertent home owner abuse. The Cutler-Hammer Fire-Guard AFCI combines arc-fault technology with conventional thermal-magnetic circuit
protection, providing increased protection for the electrical system. Cutler-Hammer FIRE-GUARD AFCI can also be equipped with ground-fault protection; the
combination of AFCI and GFCI enhances the protection of people and property.

According to Cutler-Hammer, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission reported that in 1996 there were more than 43,000 home fires caused by electrical
wiring systems, resulting in 330 deaths, 1,800 injuries and more than $700 million in property losses.

Cutler-Hammer said that Fire-Guard represents a new era in residential breaker protection. ''Cutler-Hammer is dedicated to bringing technological advancements to
the marketplace that increase safety for the home owner,'' DiArchangel said. ''Cutler-Hammer's FIRE-GUARD AFCI represents the next generation of enhanced
circuit breaker protection.''

The 1999 National Electric Code states that AFCI protection will be required on 15- and 20-ampere bedroom outlet circuits in new construction beginning in the
year 2002.
