AT&T to Open Cable Link When Excite At Home Pact Ends, NYT Says

New York, Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- AT&T Corp. has decided to offer independent Internet service providers access to its cable lines after its exclusive contract with Excite At Home Corp. expires in 2002, the New York Times said, citing executives close to the company. The agreement, which AT&T inherited when it acquired Tele-Communications Inc. earlier this year, has prevented AT&T from moving more quickly to open its cable systems to competitors to offer consumers high-speed access to the Internet. An AT&T spokeswoman declined to comment, while executives said AT&T has been seeking an independent Internet company that will agree to AT&T's conditions, the paper reported.

AT&T's relationship with Excite At Home has prompted Internet service providers, including America Online Inc. and PSINet Inc., to wage a lobbying campaign to force ``open access' to AT&T's cable lines.
