Altern8, I agree - I've ordered from BYND, and the service was supurb! And it was a more positive experience than any other experience buying either software or hardware online.

Unfortunately, I don't think that's good enough. It is going to be awfully tough to do the "branding" necessary to get any significant share of the consumer market.

I think they made a BIG MISTAKE a LONG time ago, when they changed their name from software.net to beyond.com. What the hell does "beyond" have to do with software? It's an un-memorable name. software.net tells you EXACTLY what they sell.

They would have been better-off spending some of those advertising $$$ instead on buying the domain name software.com (to avoid consumer confusion) and then perhaps changing the name from software.net to software.com.

(Turns out that software.com isn't even in the same business - they have a vertical-market product line, and the name is really wasted on the company that currently has that name.)

The other big mistake was locating in California: a large percentage of their potential customers are in California, and have to pay California sales tax - a distinct disadvantage.

I think at this point they would be better-off concentrating on the government and corporate business, which I think they could continue to grow slowly but steadily, and at much lower expense. It would make for a boring stock, but one that you could still make several times your money in over a period of years.
