Man is inherently neither good nor evil. Man is Man. The good or evil develop from the philosophical approach to life one takes and the resulting ethics and morality that follow. Quite simply, "good" is life and "evil" is anti-life. That is the basis on which much can be judged. If inalienable rights are recognized as unqualified values applied to human life, then no civic responsibilities are needed to "balance" them. They are either rights or non-rights. If conditions are attached, then they are not rights, but privileges. A true right can never violate the inherent rights of another individual. That is why "economic rights" and this so-called "patient bill of rights" are not rights. They violate the real rights of other individuals. The right to my own life is not a privilege. The right to create my own happiness is not a privilege. The right to my property is not a privilege. The right to my liberty is not a privilege. No one has a right to one second of my life. I may grant them my time, my energy, my assistance if I choose. But the right of individual choice is supreme. No one has a lien on my life no matter how great their need. That is what your quotation ignores. Father Terrence
