It is comforting to imagine that, if only the world were fairer, you or someone like you would be in charge of everything. But if one were truly an intellectual, one would want to spend all day reading, thinking, writing, discussing, making the rounds of galleries, watching classic movies, and so on, not glad handing, making interminable speeches, attending meeting after meeting, traveling from fund raiser to fund raiser, and all of the rest that it takes to be a politician in a democracy. If one were truly an intellectual, one would not be fit to be president, but should be on staff, or better yet, kibbitzing from the sidelines.... |
