SO) Southern Company Standardizes On Dell; Largest U.S. Electric Utility Selects Dell Computer Systems For Reliability and Manageability
ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1999--Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL) announced today that Southern Company (NYSE:SO), the largest producer of electricity in the United States, has selected Dell(R) as its major supplier for workstations, and desktop and notebook personal computers over the next three years.
Southern Company's U.S. operations will run on Dell OptiPlex(R) desktop PCs, Latitude(R) notebook PCs and Dell Precision(tm) Workstations.
Southern Company has used Dell hardware as the foundation of a technology infrastructure upgrade program, replacing approximately 20,000 PCs and standardizing on the Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) operating system. Southern is leveraging Dell's reliability and manageability to control I/T total cost of ownership, as well as using customized Dell Premier Pages(sm) to place and track orders on the Internet.
"This agreement allows us to divert resources from evaluating hardware to providing information technology capabilities in support of our business units," said Chuck Darville, Southern Company technology strategy director. "We wouldn't be able to do this if we didn't have confidence in Dell's ability to meet our functional and cost requirements."
"Dell is setting the standard for corporate computer system lifecycle management and reliability," said Brian Wood, vice president and general manager of Dell's Enterprise segment. "Part of the value proposition Dell brings to Southern is the efficiency of real-time account management through our Internet-enabled Premier Pages."
Dell has developed more than 27,000 Premier Pages Web sites worldwide since the service's debut two years ago. Through customized secure Web sites, Dell's Premier Pages Service offers customers online purchasing, order status reporting and tracking, management and financial reporting, service and support, and account team contact information. Additional information on Premier Pages Service is available at dell.com.
Southern Company is one of several large enterprises to contract with Dell in recent months. The Boeing Corporation, Ford Motor Company and Edward Jones have all recently announced multi-million dollar, long-term alliances with Dell.
