Indeed, there are many things that require experience, or just the right sequence of books, or a certain aptitude that may be difficult to define. I have done a lot of acting and a fair amount of directing in my time, when in high school and college, and for a few years thereafter, and one's perspective on literature is highly affected by such experience. For example, it is easier to understand a character when one has actually tried to embody him, that is, come up with details of haberdashery or mannerism. There is something about the physicality of character which strongly colors the nuances of emotional response....
