During the past 2-3 months I have sold at least 500-700 call option contracts. I do this to give me down side protection as well as to provide additional return if the stock is not called away. I would venture that the majority of the open interest represents similar strategy rather than your BS explanation. The equity desks and option desks are separate entities and do not have some nefarious plan to control stock prices.
