Paul - RE: "Now you're worried too !"

What?! I am telling YOU that the Athlon (Pro?) 700's estimates are ABOVE whatever Intel is is parading around San Jose.

And the Athlon estimates aren't just ABOVE "E"'s in SPECfp, they are and EXTREMELY WELL above it.

Giving "E" the full benefit of the doubt and perfectly scaling its performance, a 16 2/3% increase of those 600MHz scores at JC's site would lead to this comparison -

SPEC........................int...fp
"E" 700.....................33.9..29.25
Athlon (Pro?) 700......37.....42
% Athlon faster.........9.1...43.5%

So under these IDEAL conditions for "E", the delta between the "E" 700 and Athlon 700 in int will be approximately what it currently is for the existing PIII and Athlon.

As far as fp, this future "E" falls flat on its face compared to this future Athlon.

And these are under IDEAL conditions for "E"! The delta between these processors will only increase.

Yes, these Athlon scores are estimated and I don't have a rebuttal for that.

"When AMD gets their optimized compiler and 266 MHz bus, do you think Intel will still have only the Coppermine that they have "today" ?"

So now you say a 512K Cuontimemine will come out early next year. Since that WILL be more cache bolted on to "E", I wouldn't expect the same performance jump "E" has over the PIII. Looking at the IDEALLY scaled scores, it may beat the future Athlon in int, but fp is obviously out of the question.

I'm still curious how Cascades will perform compared to "E". And a good indication of how a 512K Cuontimemine will do is to look at how a 512K Cascades does. (But doesn't the i840 chipset offer more DRDRAM performance over the i820? So you may have to take a few % off Cascades's scores.)

It may be time for you to go back to worrying about the future P-X's performance against the AthFLOP.

(For those who don't read the AMD thread - I call Cuontimemine "E" for short because that is the designation Intel will use to differentiate this PIII vs the current PIIIs.)
