(COMTEX) B: WIRELESS LOCATION SERVICES WILL BE A $3.9 BILLION BUSINES
B: WIRELESS LOCATION SERVICES WILL BE A $3.9 BILLION BUSINESS IN 2004

WASHINGTON, Oct 7, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Revenues from
location-based wireless consumer services are projected to rise more
than 100-fold, from less than $30 million this year to $3.9 billion by
2004. The Strategis Group's new study, Wireless Location Services 1999,
presents an in-depth analysis of consumer demand for location-based
services and the outlook for the industry based on surveys of more than
600 wireless users and non-users.
Key commercial services enabled by wireless location technology include:
* Emergency roadside assistance
* Traffic and navigation information
* "Enhanced 411" information services
* Location-sensitive billing

The Strategis Group's survey revealed substantial interest in these
four services. "We found that consumers were not only interested in
location-based wireless services, but were also willing to pay for
these services," says Stephan Beckert, Senior Consultant with The
Strategis Group.

In 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandated that
wireless carriers must deploy technologies that can locate wireless
users who call 911 by October 2001. The Commission's five-year mandate
will result in a dramatic deployment of location technologies -- far
faster than the market would achieve without regulatory intervention.
However, The Strategis Group believes that once these technologies are
deployed, location-specific wireless services will represent a
significant revenue opportunity for wireless carriers.
Projected Annual Wireless Location Service Revenues, 1999-2004 (millions)

1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004
ERA $26 $74 $184 $627 $1,544 $2,876
E411 $1 $4 $105 $320 $669 $1,201
LSB $0 $0 $158 $524 $1,263 $2,297
Traffic $1 $5 $51 $152 $309 $539

revenues.)

"Our research shows that there's more to location technology than just
costs," says Beckert. "Location is an enabling technology that carriers
can use to develop new revenue sources."
