TOKYO -- Fujitsu Ltd. next week will show a single-chip MPEG-2 video, audio and
system encoder at the ITU Telecom 99 exhibition in Geneva.

The device replaces traditional 4-chip MPEG-2 encoders currently used, the
Japanese company said. It is expected to find wide use in disk recorders,
camcorders and other compact audio/visual equipment.

The system-on-a-chip includes the MPEG-2 video encloder, a 16-bit digital signal
processing (DSP) audio encoder and a 32-bit proprietary RISC processor core. An
adaptive pre-filtering function and time base corrector is implemented in the chip.

The 2.5-V single chip has a clock frequency of 54 MHz, with power consumption
of 1.5 W. It is produced using 0.25-micron processes with four-layer interconnect
on the chip.
