Basic economic theory dictates that it is usually inefficient to backward or forward integrate - especially into a market that is already efficient. Why on Earth these Japanese conglomerates continue to insist on making everything is irrational. That "old think" is a relic from their "centralized planning" past and needs to be forgotten if they (the Japanese people) want to have a true "wealth creating" economy.

Companies (all companies - especially ones in advanced economies with efficient capital markets) should stick to their "core competencies."
