I believe it could be the baiting of the bid strategy.
The M/M's who are short the stock, bait the bid down to scare off investors and make those that are shakey, get out of the stock so the M/M's can cover and buy before the news and then sell at a much higher price.
Look at PLRP they are doing the same thing. JMHO.
