Calypso,

HIFN's valuation got way out of hand for a one-product company (I did some work on them when they were still part of STAC). While they do have a lock on the compression algorithm - they successfully defended the patent agaisnt motorola, an impressive feat, their encryption processors are(to the best of my knowledge) constructed using off the shelf parts and may lack headroom for high-speed apps. The company may not have the know-how internally to design real high speed encryption chips which are very complicated. IREG is very good at this, so is rainbow but I would hesitate to say that either of these companies can do better than IBM and Cisco. If IBM and Cisco standardize the hardware on the end user and network router, everyone else gets marginalized.

btw, I think HIFN has been halted.
