I keep threatening to pull out last year's Giant insert and this year's, and compare them, but I am too lazy, really.

Actually I did that. I was doing all kinds of research on these web-based grocery chains. I was trying to see if Safeway was intentially dropping prices now to force the webgrocers down - stuff like that.

It was just a cursory exercise but I believe fruit and vegetables are lower than last year. Meat is about the same. Cereal, and packaged foods (things like Hamburger Helper) are 25% higher than last year. Frozen food like lean cuisine is lower.

So, I couldn't come to any real conclusion one way or the other. I think things that are packaged in the US (that require US labor) might be higher than last year. But this cereal situation is collusion and that skews everybody else. BTW lots of cereal is over $5./box.
