The Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party says it can bring political stability to India following its victory in the general election.

The National Democratic Alliance - made up of the BJP and its allies - secured a majority of more than 40 seats.

The Congress party - which has governed India for 45 of the past 52 years - suffered its worst result in more than 50 years and conceded defeat.

BJP leader Atal Behari Vajpayee will be sworn in as prime minister early next week - the first incumbent to be voted back to power since Indira Gandhi in 1971.....
