If Procept secures government funding(announcement by press release) for their clinical program prior to the conculsion of Phase I clinical trials(end of 2nd quarter)this would seem to lead credibility to Procept's comment in the 10K that they have a leading drug candidate. I would be surprised if the National Institute of Health and the British Medical Research Council would do anything until the results are in on the Phase I. If vaginal irritation developes it will probably nail the coffin shut on Procept. I would sure like to see the National Institute of Health get actively involved. It seems like all emphasis is on treatment of AIDS and very little on prevention.

I noticed that Procept made the comment that preclinical studies demonstrates that PRO 2000 is more effective anti-HIV agent than nonoxynol-9. This seems like a comparison of Apples to Oranges. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't nonoxynol-9 a spermicidal lubricant which reduces the number of active sperm. The condom if used properly reduces the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. I have never seen nonoxynol-9 as a topical administered gel.

The establishment of Phase I/II safety trials and a Phase III efficacy trial will be extremely difficult. That may be why Gild is moving slowly. It will be interesting to see if Procept can continue to move at a fast pace.

I would think that women in industrialized countries would want to use a topical administered gel. This would give more power to the woman to control her destiny. Alot of men don't like to use condoms(lack of sensitivity) and not all partners tell the truth about their sexual lifesyles(multiple partners, etc.). Determination of market size is not that easy. I bet the makers of the female condom felt they had a sure winner!

P.S. Tell Gild to give some of that cash to Procept.
