Lizzie, you are really off base. In 1900 law was used to segregate blacks, Chinese, Indians, Mexicans from using white facilities. Many places there were no schools for minorities. Trains, schools, many jobs, the armed services were segregated by law. Peonage existed in much of the South. The state of Tennessee sold prisoners to work in coal mines along-side the children (there was libertarianism for you). Chinese were excluded from immigration. Laws prevented people from forming unions (denied their right to associate). Land was stolen from Indians (and Hawaii from Hawaiians). All of this by law. Women and in many places minorities were not allowed to vote -- by law. Poll taxes prevented many minorities from even trying to vote. In many places employers demanded that workers agree not to join unions (yellow-dog contracts). In many states blacks were not allowed to marry whites (and vice versa). The bible and Christianity were imposed in most public schools. Jews were excluded from top schools and neighborhoods and graveyards. etc. etc. etc. Blacks were excluded de jure from public office in the South and de facto everywhere else.
Monopolies controlled many industries. You could not ship your oil in competition with John D. Rockefeller's monopoly. Battleships sat unfinished because the steel monopoly would not cut the price or allow foreign armor plate to be imported. Hawaiian sugar growers could not find a market for their sugar because of the Sugar Trust. Tariffs were imposed on the "exports" of the Philippines and Porto Rico.
There was little protected free speech. People were imprisoned for advocating birth control, or demonstrating for votes for women.
There were no pensions for old people or the poor or disabled. The "poor house" was segregated by race and sex and the right to run it was auctioned off to the lowest bidder.
Several hundred blacks were lynched each year. Entire towns of blacks were burned and slaughtered (before and after 1900).
Strikers and their children were shot down by troops (before and after 1900 e.g. Ludlow Massacre 1914).
The Carolina parakeet and the passenger pigeon were driven to extinction. Wetlands were destroyed. Rivers were polluted. Land eroded. This was libertarianism at its freest.
