It is my understanding that the MMs are the only one in the US that can short stocks. Canadians can also short US stocks. MM need the capability of being able to short due to the nature of their business, ie) If I wanted to buy shares of ADOT and the MMs didn't have any ADOT shares in their inventory, they would sell ADOT shares short to fill my order. I have also gotten caught at time seeing a profit evaporate after a run in a penny stock. If a penny runs on high volume, you might want to watch the run and pull some of your profit out when the price stalls. Once the volume dries up, the price will drop down to more normal levels.
