BM to Cut 5 Percent to 10 Percent of Personal Computer Workers

(I left off the I, since, well you can guess.)

Armonk, New York, Oct. 8 (Bloomberg) -- International Business Machines Corp., the world's largest computer maker, said it's cutting 5 percent to 10 percent of its 10,000-person personal computer unit to reduce expenses in the money-losing division.

Some of the workers will be reassigned to other business units, the company said. IBM is merging its consumer and business PC operations to further cut costs.

IBM lost almost $1 billion last year in its PC business as it cut inventory and farmed out some assembly duties to distributors to compete better with Dell Computer Corp., the biggest direct seller of PCs. IBM's PC unit lost $153 million before taxes in the second quarter.

IBM fell 3 3/16 to 113 3/16 in early trading.
