In an effort to finally turn a profit, IBM's Personal Systems Group is shaving 5 to 10 percent of its 10,000-person workforce -- that is, anywhere from 500 to 1,000 jobs -- according to a memo sent to Personal System Group employees Wednesday by IBM (NYSE:IBM) Executive VP Dave Thomas. The company is also seriously considering pulling out of many retail outlets next year in favor of a major new Web sales push, sources said.
