****Oracle To Launch Mobile-Phone Web Browser - Report 10/07/99
CITY, STATE, COUNTRY, 1999 OCT 7 (Newsbytes) -- By Steven Bonisteel, Newsbytes. Oracle Corp. [NASDAQ:ORCL] was reported today to be readying to unveil a browser that will enable any mobile phone user to access information on the Internet. The Reuters news service, quoting an Oracle executive, said the browser technology, named "Portal-to-Go" would work even with traditional analog cellular phone systems and with most existing handsets. Denise Lahey, vice-president of Oracle's mobile and embedded technology division, said the mobile browser can access data formatted using the extensible markup language (XML), Reuters reported. "XML is an open standard first of all," she was quoted as saying. "It's very easy to take something from XML and transform it into whatever's supported on every device -- from a pager to a cell phone." The report said Oracle is working with Motorola to build voice-control technology into the browser, while Sun Microsystems will help it work with other remote devices, such as printers.
