Combat is completely different from any other type of assignment. FOr one thing it can get you killed. My dad was in combat in the jungle in WWII and anyone who was NOT in combat has no business implying they were (imo) because combat is awful. Much worse than the stupid war movies make it seem- sure, they show the guts, but they don't show the boredom and the total privation. Nothing can show that. Combat is a different animal from anything else I can think of. I don't even know what to analogize it to- I am not sure there are any good analogies. So you can say people "did their part" but it wasn't anywhere near the same kind of part.
