Speaking of jobs...and PCs - IBM plans job cuts in PC unit

ARMONK, N.Y. - IBM, the world's largest computer maker, says it's
cutting 5% to 10% of its 10,000-person personal computer unit to reduce
expenses in the money-losing division. Some of the workers will be
reassigned to other business units, the company said. IBM is merging its
consumer and business PC operations to further cut costs. IBM lost almost
$1 billion last year in its PC business as it cut inventory and farmed out some
assembly duties to distributors to compete better with Dell Computer, the
biggest direct seller of PCs. IBM's PC unit lost $153 million before taxes in
the second quarter.
