you should probably go look at the little Mom n Pop stores and see how long the lines are before you jump to conclusions.

You MAY be right, but consumers may be switching to low price faster than we get closures in small stores with good service. A checker at WalMart may handle the dollar volume in an hour that a Mom n Pop store might do in a day (if lucky).

Related Thought:
I visited the WalMart on the MountainView / Los Altos CA border this week. I was in a long line as you mentioned but it was the Noon hour. What was interesting is on the Corners along El Camino Real RIGHT NEXT TO WALMART were about 50 day laborours hanging out waiting to get a job. Usually gardeners pick them up to clear the land, cut trees, etc. in Los Altos Hills and other high priced areas. IT strikes me every time that they might prefer a regular job inside the nice WalMart store with health care...they just need a little green card.
