Dumb. In WWII for every soldier on the line there were ten behind the line to supply, feed, clothe, rearm, etc. Without those ten supporting actors, the efficacy of the fighting force would have been drastically reduced if not altogether eliminated. There was plenty of hardship and deprivation involved in these behind the lines jobs too even if the guys weren't being shot at. For instance navy cargo ships or air cargo planes can and did sink/crash. War is an inherently dangerous situation for almost all concerned. However, the essence of an efficient army is the concept of team and cohesiveness. All of the "line" vets I have talked too recognize this fact and most recognize the effort that went into making sure they were prepared to fight when necessary. You can not reasonably discount any part of the effort because total mobilization was required to crush the Axis. JLA
