"Cushy billet" can go either way in terms of ridicule among people in military service. Say it once, it's a friendly punch in the shoulder - keep on saying it - whole 'nother story. For a Marine officer to refer to another as an "8th & I Marine" would not be considered a compliment.

Draftees aside, I would say most who served in my era felt a little "left out" if they were never in Southeast Asia. I have never heard a non-draftee say he wished he could have avoided going -- many career people and young enlistees went more than once. Not all of these came home. God keep them.
