Active Voice Named 'Overall Winner' in 'Computer Telephony Magazine's' Unified Messaging Shootout.
Based on Hands-on Lab Testing of Enterprise-Scale Messaging Solutions From Active Voice,
Lucent, AVT, and Key Voice.

'The reviewers found it to be very seamless, with the cleanest and most intuitive interface of those
evaluated. Message retrieval was also very quick.'

SEATTLE, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- "Computer Telephony Magazine(TM)" announced that Active Voice Corporation's (Nasdaq: ACVC) true unified messaging solution -- Unity -- was the "Overall Winner" in their unified messaging shootout article in this month's issue. The results were compiled from hands-on testing of four enterprise-scale multimedia messaging server from -- Active Voice, Lucent, AVT, and Key Voice. Each server was analyzed and compared in the voice and data communication industry publication's independent lab tests.

"The results of this test are a real validation of Active Voice's visionary strategy for the past three years," said Frank J. Costa, Active Voice CEO and president. "We took a fundamentally different approach than most of our competitors. Rather than be first to market with an integrated messaging port to Windows NT, we made the decision to take the long road and build a 'true' unified
messaging solution from the ground up. We believe 'true' unified messaging is the only architectural platform that meets the needs of enterprise customers who -- demand scalability, unified administration, an easy and intuitive user experience, and a solution that lowers their total cost of ownership."

Active Voice captured first-place scores in three of the test's six product evaluation categories, including "Ease of Installation," "Product Features," and "Outlook Client Integration." "Active Voice racked up a perfect score for its Outlook integration," reported James Gifford, Computer Telephony's associate editor. "The reviewers found it to be very seamless, with the cleanest and most intuitive interface of those evaluated. Message retrieval was also very quick." (Web site link to CT's

The news follows another recent industry benchmark announcement made on October 5, 1999 -- "that Active Voice was the first company to demonstrate true unified messaging for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, beta 3 (previously code-named 'Platinum')." The demonstration, held at the fourth annual Microsoft Exchange Conference in Atlanta, on October 4-7, featured an upcoming version of Unity, the company's true unified messaging communications server -- which provides native support for the Exchange
2000 messaging and collaboration platform, and Microsoft Active Directory -- running on Windows 2000 Server RC2. Microsoft representatives at the show confirmed the announcement.

About Unity

Unity is a Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R)-based communications server that delivers voice mail, fax, and unified messaging in a truly unified environment. Unity gives users the ability to access voice, fax, and e-mail messages from their desktop PC, via touchtone telephone, or over the Internet. Unity's superior "true unified messaging" architecture minimizes installation, administration, and support costs -- making life easier for system administrators and lowering an organization's total cost of ownership. Unity is "convergence-ready" and will simultaneously support both Internet Protocol (IP) and traditional telephone
systems -- making it a smart investment for organizations planning to embrace IP telephony.
