But it's a calculated risk. As you say, police officers and firemen take a job that puts their lives potentially at risk each and every day. Much more so than military personnel.

My personal opinion is that people enlist in the military for a myriad of reasons, and my guess is that if truth be known in this day and age, most of the reasons are self-centered...... ie, early retirement, educational benefits, getting a high paying airline pilots job, resume enhancement,etc. Yes, when you enlist you know there is a calculated risk that you might be called to serve in military conflict, but compared to say our parents generation who knew the potential of a ground war, the risk is relatively small.

I'm not saying I disrespect people in the military, but will say they aren't necessarily worthy of "high regard" individually for simply the reason that they put on a uniform.
