The e-go revolution
e-go can revolutionize the business day for many professionals, by streamlining their daily messaging routine. e-go frees message management from the desktop computer—now voice e-mail and fax messages can be managed from any phone or any computer with Web access. voicemobility.com
"We think voice is going to be the next wave of the Internet," said Judy Radlinsky, a spokeswoman for General Magic, which offers both services through its myTalk program. Callers use a special number to leave a voice greeting, and the message pops up as an e-mail. Recipients can listen to messages from the computer or by phone. One drawback: the need for separate numbers. Regular voice mail services run by phone companies automatically transfer unanswered or busy calls to the voice mail system. With Internet-based services, callers must make a second call, or recipients must subscribe to a call-forwarding service from the phone company. Jfax and eFax, which also offer voice e-mail as well, also have services that translate faxes to e-mail. "The idea is (a person is) a moving target," said Josh Mailman, an eFax product demonstrator. "The easier you can be found, capture and get your information, the better." canoe.com
Voice mail on the Net one of many new Internet technologies
NEW YORK (AP) -- Voice mail on the Internet? E-mail over the phone? The line separating phone and computer continues to blur. Among the thousands of products and services featured at the Internet World conference this week were ones that let callers leave phone messages as e-mail attachments and others that allow subscribers to check e-mail from any phone. "The easier you can be found, capture and get your information, the better." Internet World, a five-day conference sponsored by publishers of Internet World magazine, brings together Internet companies ranging from Microsoft Corp. to the smallest startups. The fall show in the United States is now in its seventh year. Offerings at the show largely targeted other Internet companies, but a handful of products were designed specifically for consumers or business travellers. Ancestry.com Inc., for instance, offers databases with 400 million names to help people trace their family roots. Meanwhile, Handspring Inc. and Palm Computing Inc. showed off their latest hand-held organizers. The Internal Revenue Service also had a presence, handing out brochures on electronic filing of tax returns and giving away CD-ROMs featuring forms and publications for tax year 1998. (No matter that the returns were due April 15.) Several services targeted the growing e-commerce business. Some help companies set up online retail opeerations. Others offer digital cash systems that let buyers shop from different merchants without having to enter a credit card number each time. Online gaming also had a presence. MicroGaming Systems demonstrated its technology for setting up Internet casinos offshore. Lisa Wycherley, the company's senior vice-president, said checks were developed to ensure casino operators do not rip off the players.
"Players want to know they can trust the casino," she said. "Anything to make the industry credible will improve people's confidence." |
