Matt,
You couldn't be more wrong. You've stayed here a few times. I grew up here and have lived here for over 20 years. Now, I say again:
The transportation hub of Manhattan is 42nd street. The LIRR, Metro North, and other trains run out of Grand Central. Port Authority is the central bus station, with buses going up to Canada, down south, across the country...you get the idea. In fact, there is a shuttle (S train) connecting GC and PA, if you don't want to walk the 3-4 crosstown blocks. Now:
The following subways stop on 42nd: 1, 2, 3, 9 (orange, up and downtown, west side) N, R, (yellow, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens?) A, C, E (blue, far west side up and downtown) B, D, F, Q, ( Brooklyn) 4, 5, 6,(Green, east side up and downtown) 7 (purple, don't know where it goes).
So, between 5th and 8th ave, you have the transportation hub of NYC. Yes. Almost every subway, plus a bus and train station and a shuttle that connects them.
Now, stay with me. I repeat:
At World Trade Center, there are stops of the 1, 9 (orange uptown west side); N, R (yellow, Brooklyn, Manhattan); and Path trains, which run to either Hoboken or Newark. Also, the C and E (blue, far west side uptown). For that matter, Matty, there are other places that have more than one subway stopping there, and they aren't hubs, either: 33rd Street/Penn Station; West 4th in the Village; and East 59th.
I don't have to worry about staying anywhere, I live here. If I was visiting, though, I'd stay in midtown or on the Upper West side. Thats just me, you can stay in the YMCA if you like.
