RE <<<As I recall, haven't Compaq and IBM been LOSING MONEY on their PC operations in the past few quarters - WHILE LOWERING THEIR PRICES TO LEVELS BELOW THEIR COSTS.?>>>

As I recall, CPQ only lost $ in the last quarter (they have been profitable in 8 of the last 10 quarters), leading to the ouster of pfeiffer, and the loss was attributed to CPQ's failure to move to a direct retailing approach(like Dell's) fast enough. IBM too is moving quickly to the direct marketing approach.

As for creating a cliche of intc/Dell, you know what usually happens to exclusive clubs.....they become inbred and tend to wither and die. Its funny how both Dell and intc have had similar problems in the same year.....slowing revenue growth and having to retake the loss of low end market share......coindence, maybe not. In any case I would rather stick to AMD's diversity.
