I hesitate to tread to far out, I skipped the fine arts portion of my education. I suspect Stravinsky makes the list because The Rite of Spring shocked sensibilities by having a rape on stage. Broke new ground and all that.

Ellington a pop star? Nay I say, he may be the greatest American composer. His road shows that were done to entertain audiences didn't ingratiate him with the folks who hand out the Pulitzer Prize in Music, though. He was nominated in 1965, but didn't win. I guess the boobs figured if it was entertaining it couldn't be art.

Edit: Ellington was nominated in 1965 for a special prize for his forty years of contributions to music. This was recommended by the three-member music jury, but their recommendation was rejected by the fourteen member advisory board. It caused quite an uproar, two members of the music jury resigned in protest. There were charges of racism, cultural bias, etc. Ellington didn't need them, though. He was awarded many other honors.
