I think the shortage of change is mostly due to it being so worthless that people either throw it in a jar or occasionally on the ground.

Their will be a very serious shortage of paper currency if the US gets on average 20% of their M2 money supply in cash before Y2K. That is a certain figure. Their is still a good chance of a serious shortage if as little as 10% of all of peoples available money is taken out as currency.

Does anyone know of any unbiased surveys that ask if people will get some extra greenbacks before January?
