TELECOMS-Siemens aims to triple mobile phone sales GENEVA, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Germany's Siemens AG said on Sunday it plans to boost its mobile phone unit sales to 35 million in 2001 from 12 million as it aims for 10 percent of the global market for the devices. ''It will be very positive for the balance sheet,'' Siemens management board member Volker Jung told Reuters of the expansion plan after holding a news conference at the Telekom 99 trade fair in Geneva. ''Profits will go up a little bit.'' But he said falling prices in the electronics business meant the profits increase would not match the rise in sales. The group also said it had acquired 15 percent in San Diego-based U.S. ''smartphone'' maker NeoPoint Inc and was planning a network solutions joint venture with Japan's NEC . Jung said Siemens and NEC want to develop a common platform for broadcasting systems with UMTS technology. Siemens did not disclose a purchase price for its stake in NeoPoint, which makes mobile phones with Internet capability and other advanced features. NeoPoint is a market leader in the development of the U.S. CDMA digital mobile standard, Jung said. Siemens is in the process of restructuring its diverse business as it seeks to improve its focus. ''We are at about 80 percent when it comes to restructuring,'' Jung said. ''I think we are very far. There are no question marks any more.'' He said the group's four main business areas were now Internet protocol networking, mobile networks, information and communications devices and Siemens business services.
