Voop,
My kid's accounts (6 and 10) are just large enough so that their gains spill over some into our taxes. Otherwise my wife and I invest for their future needs in our own accounts, with many of our favorite primates.

You must have struggled with this decision as well, and I'd appreciate hearing your view.

When the kids come of age, will they be ready for the automatic transfer of financial responsibility? I worry that they might not yet have the maturity, knowledge, or desire to handle large amounts of money. Having to earn it from scratch (paying state, federal, FICA, ... taxes on the way) could give a understanding of the value of money.
