How far away are you from "real" farmland where people are working the fields? How difficult would it be to arrange transportation for the rocks from an area like that to where you live?

We've gotten landscaping rock for free just for hauling it away from farmer's fields...but it's nice to pay the farmer at least a token amount. You have to time things right...now is a good time of year BTW... Farmers often have rock piles in the corners of their fields where they toss any stones or rocks that turn up during plowing and disking. Many farmers are quite happy to get rid of this rock if someone will take it away... it takes up space in the field and is basically useless. In the old days, everyone used field stones to throw into the concrete when building barn foundations, etc... Not so much because it made it any stronger, but because farmers often mixed their concrete at the farm and by throwing rocks into the poured sections, you could save a bit of work mixing and pouring concrete. I've helped pour a couple of concrete barn footings like that over the years.... Lots of work...(-:

Anyhow, if you go for "country drives" it might be worth scouting for rock piles in the corners of farm fields. However, I suspect that it's pretty urbanized all around you and perhaps such things don't even exist anymore...
