LONDON and WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 1999--
London Data Center to be Operational by Year-end 1999 Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris Centers to Be Complete by Mid-2000
Global TeleSystems Group, Inc. (GTS) (Nasdaq:GTSG.O; Frankfurt:GTS; Easdaq:GTSG), one of the leading providers of borderless broadband communications services across Europe and beyond, today announced that it is developing four data and web hosting centers in Europe. The first of these is expected to be operational in London by year-end 1999. Additional centers in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris are scheduled to be operational during the first half of 2000. According to H. Brian Thompson, chairman and chief executive officer of GTS: "Data and web hosting centers are a natural extension of our strategy to meet the end-to-end needs of the web- and Euro-centric content, service and applications providers who are leading the Internet and multimedia age in Europe. In addition to carrying their international traffic on our network, we can host and distribute their applications, support their E-commerce activities and provide easy peering arrangements. "This announcement goes hand in hand with our City Enterprise Network (CEN) plans. By extending our high capacity fiber network deep into Europe's cities and then putting our data and web hosting centers 'on-net,' we can offer tremendous flexibility, scalability and speed to our customers and act as an integrated one-stop shop." GTS data and web hosting centers will provide server co-location, dedicated and shared web hosting, transit and electronic commerce services to customers. The centers will also provide secure space and robust IP transit for ISPs and content providers. Delivered over Europe's most robust IP backbone, transit will be at speeds up to 100 gigabits per second. The GTS network is supplemented by numerous private and public peering arrangements so content can be delivered seamlessly from GTS data and web hosting centers to virtually any destination in Europe without first routing through the United States. North American and global transit are, nonetheless, also available. Further, the centers will provide network and Internet connectivity and the facility to cross-connect with other service providers. Commenting on the launch of the data and web hosting centers, Amit Pau, president of GTS IP Services, said: "These centers add significant additional value to our IP business. We will efficiently and securely manage traffic flows and exchange all types of traffic from web content providers, application service providers, systems integrators, ISPs and other IP and data intensive organizations." GTS data and web hosting center services will include secure server co-location, dedicated and shared web hosting and support interactive client e-business with end users. Pau continued: "The combination of these new centers with GTS's trans-European fiber network will allow GTS to provide small- and medium-sized enterprises with a more cost-effective range of Internet applications delivered with the service performance and assurance of a committed pan-European partner. Larger and more web-centric customers will benefit from the flexibility afforded by GTS's end-to-end facility offerings."
