- Data General To Intro Mumps Migration Tool

Data General Corp. next week will unveil software that will
let health-care businesses unlock information buried in
proprietary databases and application development
environments. The software, called the Mumps Data Extractor
(MDE), is a data migration tool that will help users of the
proprietary Mumps environment convert data to Microsoft's
SQL Server 7.0.

Once the data is in SQL Server, administrators, developers,
and users can create reports with the host of data mining
and application development tools that work with the
database.

Developed 30 years ago as an open-source technology, Mumps
was designed as a database and application-development
environment. Over time it was embraced by the health-care
industry and became a de facto standard. However, it's
become nearly impossible to find Mumps developers who can
unlock information from the system.
MDE, which was developed by Strategic Reporting Systems Inc.
under a technology alliance with Data General, will be
available Nov. 15. Pricing will be determined by the amount
of Mumps data that has to be migrated. - Martin J. Garvey
